Institute of Sociology (IfS)

The Institute of Sociology at the University of Duisburg-Essen is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. With 16 professorships and more than 50 employees it is one of the largest sociological teaching and research institutions in Germany. Its research focus is on “Work, Organisation and Social Integration”, the “Development and Research of Advanced Methods of Empirical Social Research”, “Social Inequalities, Lifestyles and Gender”, “Theory of Modern Societies” and “Comparative Societies and Transnationalisation”. The IfS is thus part of a dynamic and innovative research environment that enjoys a high reputation both on a national and international level as well as in a wide range of research fields. Furthermore, the IfS forms an interdisciplinary cluster in the social sciences, whose expertise is also highly acknowledged by various socio-political actors (e.g. political parties, trade unions, municipalities, etc.) as an important source of consultancy. The main focus of Prof. Dr. Ute Klammer’s work is on social policy, gender equality and higher education research. Ute Klammer is also Director of the Institute for Work and Qualification at the University of Duisburg-Essen (IAQ) and Director of the German Institute for Interdisciplinary Social Policy Research (DIFIS).

Essen College of Gender Studies (EKfG

The Essener Kolleg für Geschlechterforschung (EKfG) is a central academic institution of the University of Duisburg-Essen and is represented in the EXENKO project by the managing director Dr Maren A. Jochimsen. The EKfG has been initiating, coordinating and conducting interdisciplinary gender research since 1998. The college currently consists of 55 members from seven different faculties at the University of Duisburg-Essen. This guarantees a high degree of interdisciplinarity with diverse opportunities for cooperation and networking within the university and beyond, both in research and in the promotion of young researchers. One of the unique features of EKfG is the close and consolidated cooperation between medical researchers and members of the faculties of the social sciences, humanities, engineering and natural sciences. It is also the task of EKfG to actively shape research policy issues and to support the promotion of young scientists through cooperation at the federal, state and international level.
